A plane ticket bought more than one month in advance costs $500. If the ticket is purchased less than a month in advance, it costs $750. The total amount collected is as if each ticket had cost $600. If 50 tickets were purchased in advance, how many tickets were sold total?

A plane flies northeast starting at the equator. How far does it fly until it reaches the north pole?

Assume the plane is a mathematical point and the earth is a perfect sphere of radius 4000 miles.
Can this problem be solved without using calculus to compute arc length of a curve in spherical coordinates?
